After my huge disappointment at the Betrothed Series I went into this with low expectations. Following Buttons & Lingerie Series which were so dam awesome its hard to keep pushing out books with characters that are so endearing, and as this author certainly publishes quickly there will always be the odd book or series that doesnt appeal. I was pleasantly surprised, but I can also see alot of hardcore fans may not enjoy it so much.I think the main difference with this series than previous, our heroine Raven while a strong independent woman with high morals and a massive heart, her character flaw is her weak spoilt sister who she enables. This will be a turn off for some readers , it annoyed me and I wanted to slap Melanie upside the head for being such a stupid brat.Themes in this series will not be tolerated by all, if you are an avid reader of this author, it will be no surprise, but for new readers, there is kidnapping, slave labour, potential rape and brutal killing of women. Be Warned, if you cant read a book of fiction and not take this stuff to heart, then dont read this.At the start of the book we get a snippet into the lives of Magnus and his brother, and I am really looking forward to finding out more about their background and the tragic life they have lead. It somewhat explains what they have gone on to do with their lives.The story seemed to flow really quickly, even tho at the camp the book covers about 6 weeks , it feels more like months. I cannot wait for the next book, I think we have only scratched the surface of these complex characters, and the question if love will prevail under these extraordinary circumstances.I was sent the first 3 chapters of the next book for pre-ordering it (details are at the end of the first book how to do this), and arrrrgggghhh I almost regretted getting it coz i was so dam excited and desperate for more.This is a dark story, slightly different to what we have seen from the author before, but still along similar lines. Dont buy it if you are sensitive then give a bad review, read the reviews and make an informed choice.Easy 5 stars for me, well worth a one click. I may be in the minority on this, but as a whole it wasn’t my favorite Penelope book and I’ve read them all. For the most part Raven annoyed me. She didn’t have the same appeal to me as Pearl, Vanessa or Catalina. I instantly fell In love with them. I don’t fault her for her resistance at the camp because I would’ve been the same. What I fault her for is going back and betraying Magnus. She knew how much he bent over backwards for you. To the point that he looked weak in front of his brother but she still went back to burn down the camp. I hope she doesn’t think that there won’t be any repercussions to her actions. Because I’m sure that there will be. Especially because she said that she’s staying in Paris. I understand her having survivors guilt and wanting to free the other women. But now she’s put herself back in harms way, when she could’ve just gone on with life and been thankful that she made it out. I did like when her and Magnus were just “normal” people that’s the part of the story that really started to catch my attention. But I will still read the next book just because I’m interested to see Magnus point of view.
